Download Speed Comparison
Many software companies claim that they have the fastest and most
powerful FTP Client in the world. As download speed can be easily
measured and compared, we decided to put these claims into the test,
and compared the download speed of 3D-FTP to other leading FTP Clients.
The result shows that 3D-FTP is over 6x faster than CuteFTP 5.0
XP, and over 3x faster than it's closest rival WS_FTP Pro.

FTP Clients in this Comparison
We downloaded and installed the following FTP Client software for
the test run:

We used these programs as-is, without any optimizations, and reader
should realize that it might be possible to increase download speed
of these clients by modifying various settings. The 3D-FTP was also
used with default settings, with 20 active threads (in 3D-FTP user
can freely change thread count even during the transfer). WS_FTP
Pro was also tested in 20 concurrent connections-mode. In CuteFTP
and FtpVoyager user cannot increase the number of concurrent transfers,
so both clients were tested using the (only available) 1-thread
mode.
The Test
We installed all FTP Clients to the same computer. Each FTP client
was used to download a set of files from publicly available FTP
server, and time was measured to complete the download. This test
was repeated five times for each client. From these results we calculated
an average download speed, indicated by KB/sec number (KB/sec =
KiloBytes per second). This number indicates the overall download
speed of FTP Client.
Test Environment - The Client Computer
All FTP clients were installed on the same
computer with following specifications:
- Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional
(SP3)
- Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2000+
- Motherboard: ASUS A7V333
- RAM: 512MB of PC2700-DDR memory installed
- Hard Disk: 45GB IBM Deskstar GXP hard disk
with ATA-100 interface and 8.5ms average seek time
Test Environment - The Network
The computer was connected to twisted-pair 100Mbps local area network,
and LAN was connected to internet via 100Mbps switch and cable modem
having maximum 2.5Mbps download speed.
Test Environment - The Server Computer
These total set of 116 files were downloaded from the publicly
available FTP server at ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/doc/lpf/
At time of this writing, this FTP site was running on four processor
Sun 450/4GB/600+GB server.
Test Environment - Files
The test file set consists of 116 files. The files had following

Total size was 3,223,089 bytes (3.07 MB), with
average file size of 27,785 bytes. Minimum size was 185 bytes and
maximum size was 222,705 bytes.
Download Speed Results
Each FTP client was tested 5 times, by downloading
all 116 files. The time was measured to complete the download. The
following table lists all test results, in seconds.

We calculated the Relative Speed by using the slowest client, CuteFTP
5.0 XP, as baseline with 100% speed. Compared to that baseline,
3D-FTP 6.0 was over six times (6x) faster than CuteFTP 5.0 XP.
Conclusion
The 3D-FTP 6.0 with MultiWire™ transfer
engine is clearly the fastest FTP client of the clients tested here.
The result demonstrates that 3D-FTP achieved over 3x faster download
speed than it's closest rival, and over 6x faster performance than
slowest client.
This huge difference is mostly due to 3D-FTP
multi-threaded transfer engine, which automatically makes multiple
connections to the FTP server and downloads multiple files simultaneously.
We have also fine-tuned the transfer engine to deliver the maximum
performance. Of the tested clients, only WS_FTP Pro 7.5 has similar
multi-threaded capability, but it still could not come to even close
to 3D-FTP performance. The other two, CuteFTP 5.0 XP and FtpVoyager
9.1 are limited to single download connection and therefore, by
design, perform poorly when compared to 3D-FTP.
