Lost
serial keys, registration, upgrading
Q: I registered the 3D-FTP v1.0 about 5
years ago, how can I upgrade to newest version?
A: If you have registered 3D-FTP 5.0 or earlier, you are entitled
to special upgrade pricing. Please read
more here. If you have registered 3D-FTP v6.0, then upgrade
is FREE!
Q: When I order 3D-FTP, where can I download
the full version?
A: There is no separate downloadable version for registered users,
but you convert shareware version to full version by entering
registration code to the startup screen (you got the registration
key via email after purchasing the software). You can also enter
the code via Help > Register menu option.
Q: I'm registered user of 3D-FTP, but I
have lost my registration key. What should I do?
A: Send your order details to support@sitedesigner.com.
You MUST include the email address and name used for ordering.
Also include the order number (RE123456 type number) if that is
available. You'll get the registration key via email.

Cannot get remote directory listing, Firewalls, Proxies
Q: Is 3D-FTP compatible with Windows XP
SP2 firewall?
A: Yes. 3D-FTP is fully compatible with firewall installed by
Win XP Service Pack 2. You should not need to make any changes
to firewall settings, but 3D-FTP should work as-is (just make
sure that Passive Transfer is ON). If you have just installed
XP SP2 firewall and 3D-FTP stops functioning, its most probably
NOT windows firewall that prevents 3D-FTP functioning, but one
of the firewall / antivirus / worm protection features of some
other software like Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, F-secure, Avast
etc. See more below.
Q: I cannot connect to any FTP site, what's
wrong?
A: The personal firewall software (like Norton Personal Firewall,
McAfee Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm etc.) can block the access
to all FTP servers. To enable 3D-FTP support for firewalls, go
to Settings > General Settings > Proxy/Firewall-tab and
change Passive Transfer-check box setting. So if its ON, turn
if OFF and vice versa. Now restart 3D-FTP and connect again. Any
difference?
To see if it is your personal firewall that is blocking the access,
turn it temporarily off and try connecting again. If you can connect
successfully, then problem is with your firewall settings. See
the personal firewall documentation about how to enable FTP access.
Also Norton Anti Virus 2005 Worm Protection can block 3D-FTP,
so please consult Symantec documentation about how enable FTP.
Please also notice, that unregistered version of 3D-FTP transfer
features are disabled after 90-day trial period.
Q: When connecting, program stops in the
last step "Getting Directory List", what's wrong?
A: The last step of connect procedure is request of remote FTP
server directory list. This might fail due to firewall/proxy issues
(see more above), so please try changing the Passive Mode setting.
This might also be a remote FTP server issue, so please try to
connect to one of the sample sites in SiteManager. If you CAN
connect to sample site, then problem is related to your FTP server
configuration. Please consult your network admin or hosting company
if this problem is on logging to hosting company server. If you
cannot connect to any ftp server, then this is probably a firewall
problem. If you are running a personal firewall software, try
disabling it and connecting again. The 3D-FTP firewall support
can be enabled via menu Settings > General Settings > Firewall-tab.
Consult your system admin for proper settings.
Q: I get error "Illegal PORT Command"
when trying to connect?
A: If you get following error message
500 Illegal PORT Command
Syntax error, command unrecognized
you are most likely behind a firewall. To enable 3D-FTP support
for firewalls, go to Settings > General Settings > Proxy/Firewall-tab
and check Passive Transfer-check box and try connecting again.
Q: I would like to use proxy or firewall
for my FTP access. Can I do that?
A: Yes. Please see firewall/proxy tab (firewall is same as proxy
as far as 3D-FTP is concerned) in Site Editor to modify proxy/firewall
settings for selected site. If you want to use proxy or firewall
for all sites, change settings at Settings > General Settings
> Proxy/Firewall.
Backups, Copying
Site Manager data, backing up 3D-FTP settings
Q:How can I make a backup copy of my Site
Manager data, like site addresses, login usernames and passwords?
All Site Manager data is stored into the SITES.INI file in 3D-FTP
installation directory (by default this directory is c:\program
files\3D-FTP). This file contains all information about site addresses,
login usernames and passwords, bookmarks etc. So copy SITES.INI
file to safe place. If you later need to reinstall 3D-FTP, copy
SITES.INI file to installation directory after install. This restores
all Site Manager data.
Q:How can I make a backup copy of my 3D-FTP
settings, like Serial Key, Firewall, KeepAlive and File Viewer
settings?
All 3D-FTP settings are stored into the 3DFTP.INI file in \Windows\
directory (by default c:\Windows). This file contains all 3D-FTP
settings other than Site Manager data (see above). If you later
need to reinstall 3D-FTP, copy 3DFTP.INI file in c:\Windows directory
after install. This restores all 3D-FTP settings.
Skins and PlugIns
Q: How to download and install a skin?
A: You can find more information about downloading and installing
skins at Skins page.
Q: I would like to create my own skin,
how to proceed?
A: See 3D-FTP on-line help for more information. You can download
the free Skin Editor from download area.
Q: I would like to create my own PlugIn,
how to proceed?
A: The 3D-FTP PlugIn SDK and documentation are free downloads
at PlugIns & API page.
Multithreading,
adjusting number of threads
Q: I really do not understand the concept
of multithreading. What it is and what benefits do I get from
it?
A: In very simple terms:
1 thread = 1 simultaneous connection to FTP server
5 threads = 5 simultaneous connections to FTP server
20 threads = 20 simultaneous connections to FTP server
So a thread means a connection to the FTP server. So in multi-threaded
mode you have multiple simultaneous connections to the server.
Then you ask, why would you want multiple simultaneous connections?
The answer is
a) Faster download and upload speed. Each additional thread transfers
data simultaneously with other threads. So more threads means
more data transferred simultaneously. A good analogy to highway
is that more lanes you have, more cars can travel from A to B
in given time. Single threaded mode is like one-lane highway.
b) Background transfers. While you transfer files with extra
threads, there is always one thread devoted to file browsing.
So you can continue browse the FTP site while transferring files.
You can even connect to another site and browse files and add
them to transfer queue, while files are being transferred.
Q: You say that 3D-FTP is 20x faster than
its competitors, but I have seen 3x speed increase. Are there
any settings that I can adjust?
A: 3D-FTP provides up to 20x faster transfer speed! The 20x improvement
is maximum that can be archived when all 20 download threads are
active (default is 4 threads, read more
at speed comparison). You can adjust the number of threads
in use by adjusting the slider in the lower left hand corner of
the main window, or by clicking the Threads-text link. The speed
improvement is also dependent on your Internet connection, generally
the faster your Internet connection is, the more improvement you'll
see. This means that modem users will normally get 2-3x faster
performance and cable modem users will get 3-5x faster performance.
Q: When trying to transfer files, I get
"Service not available..." or "Internal control
state error" or "Too many connections..." messages
in the queue window and transfer stops?
A: You probably are trying to transfer files from/to FTP server
that limits the number of simultaneous connections allowed from
one computer (=IP address). By default 3D-FTP uses 4 simultaneous
connections, but you can change that from menu Window > Thread
Window. First try switching to Single Threaded mode and try the
transfer again. If it succeeds, you can switch to Multi-threaded
mode and try again and increase the number of threads in use.
This way you will find out what is maximum number of threads that
can be used for transfer with this server.
Program crashes,
GPFs, Error messages
Q: Program gives error message and crashes.
What is wrong?
A: We have fixed tons of bugs in the latest releases. So please
make sure that you have latest version of 3D-FTP installed (download
newer version here) and also have installed the run time files
(msruntime.exe) that can be found here
. If you still experience any problems, please let us know at
support@sitedesigner.com.
Q: I get "Wrong version of run-time
DLL" error message when running 3D-FTP first time. What should
I do?
A: You have incompatible runtime files installed, so please download
msruntime.exe
file, and install this package by running it. Then try to rerun
3D-FTP and see if you get this error message. If you still do,
run 3D-FTP installation again and then system should work.
System
requirements, Windows versions
Q: Do you have Mac / Linux / Unix version?
A: Unfortunately No
Q: What versions of Windows 3D-FTP supports?
A: 3D-FTP fully supports Win95, 98, 98SE, ME, NT4, Win2000, Win2003
Server and XP.
Q: What are minimum
system requirements for 3D-FTP?
A: Pentium200MHz / RAM 32MB / HD 5MB / 800x600 Graphics. In general,
if you can run Windows, you can run 3D-FTP.
